Proper Sanitation Methods on Road Construction Sites

Proper sanitation methods are very important for construction workers to maintain their health and safety at work. While this might seem like common sense, many people do not sanitize properly. Read this quick guide to learn about the proper sanitation solutions for road construction sites.

Shower and Sanitize Your Hands Before Every Shift

The best way to stay safe and healthy on the job is to shower and sanitize before work every day. You will be doing yourself and your coworkers a huge favor by reducing the chances of getting sick and spreading illness. If you shower at night, it might seem unnecessary to shower in the morning, but morning showers ensure extra disease protection. Also, your coworkers can often tell if you have not showered. Going into work after a shower will ease the minds of workers who are especially worried about the spread of bacteria.

Make Sure That You Have All Necessary Supplies

If you are the construction supervisor for your team, arrive at the construction facility before your shift to gather all necessary supplies. You will need all your necessary tools, sanitation products, first-aid equipment, masks, gloves, a project radio, and enough water for your team. Disinfect all the tools before your employees arrive. If some of your employees arrive early, allow them to help you so long as they wash and sanitize their hands first.

Clean and Sanitize Portable Toilets and Handwashing Stations

It is very important to clean and sanitize all portable bathrooms and handwashing stations every morning before work. This should be the first thing you do after arriving at the construction site. If you have time, perform sanitization checks every hour. If you are busy, ask one of your employees to assist you. Make sure that whoever assists you wears an extra apron while cleaning and sanitizing.

Set Up Traffic Safety Signs

All construction sites need to have traffic safety signs to warn pedestrians and drivers about road conditions and safety. This will not only make the roads safer for pedestrians and drivers, but it will also encourage social distancing. We also have traffic cones and barriers to block off your construction sites, further alerting drivers to your presence.

Recycle at the End of Your Shift

As projects get busy, it can be difficult to process trash and recyclables during during your shifts. If you can, get one person to do regular site checks for trash and recyclable items. This will ensure better health and less stress at the end of the day. Of course, by the end of a long workday, your entire team will need to contribute to a site check for all recyclable items. Your job requires both road construction and public health safety.

After Work, Sanitize and Take a Shower

After your shift, you will need to shower. If your construction facility has showers, take advantage of those. Again, this will allow you to reduce the spread of germs and disease. However, if you do not have time, it is perfectly fine to wash and sanitize your hands at the facility and shower at home. If you are a manager and notice that most of your employees prefer to shower at the facility, see if you can provide more showers within your budget.

Those are just a few proper sanitation solutions for road construction sites. When in doubt about whether you are sanitizing properly, refer to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
